Soulframe Liang, CEO of S-GAME, made it clear: Phantom Blade Zero is not a Soulslike, nor is it a traditional action game.

When the first trailer dropped, people were quick to compare it to FromSoftware’s iconic titles. But once gameplay footage came out, fans noticed a different rhythm: faster combat, more fluid animation, and a fighting style closer to Devil May Cry or Ninja Gaiden.

Still, the developer insists it’s neither. The game blends action and ARPG elements, but with a unique twist – something rooted in the Wuxia genre.

What Is Wuxia?

Wuxia is more than just an exotic-sounding term. It's a traditional Chinese literary and cinematic genre focused on martial arts heroes who fight injustice and protect the innocent. It combines elements of fantasy, honor, and deep spiritual strength.

Phantom Blade Zero aims to bring that narrative and emotional depth into gaming. Not just visually, but in how the action feels and flows. Expect battles that look like choreographed dances, full of tension and storytelling.

So don’t expect punishing difficulty like Souls games, or nonstop combos like Devil May Cry. Instead, this is shaping up to be a cinematic action RPG with its own personality.

Some believe the game could be starting its own sub-genre. The developer even said: "People want to put us in a box… but we don't belong in any existing category."
