Bungie to End Destiny 2 Support in June After 11 Years of Expansions
Bungie has announced that the next Destiny 2 update, scheduled for June 9, will be the game’s final major update after more than a decade of ongoing support, expansions, and seasonal content.
The decision marks the end of one of the longest-running live-service journeys in modern gaming. Since its launch, Destiny 2 has grown through multiple expansions, major story arcs, raids, events, and community-driven moments that helped define Bungie’s post-Halo era.
With support now reaching its final stage, Bungie is preparing to shift attention toward its next project. The studio has reportedly started hiring for a new game, though it has not yet confirmed whether this will be Destiny 3 or a completely new IP.
The move comes after Bungie’s recent struggles to meet Sony’s commercial expectations. Following Sony’s acquisition of the studio, Destiny remained one of Bungie’s most important assets, but the franchise has faced increasing pressure as player engagement, production costs, and long-term live-service demands continued to challenge the team.
For Destiny fans, the June 9 update now carries extra weight. It will not simply be another content drop, but the closing point for a game that shaped years of cooperative shooter design and built one of the most loyal communities in the industry.
The bigger question now is what comes next. If Bungie chooses to continue with Destiny 3, the studio will need to prove that the franchise can evolve beyond the structure of Destiny 2. But if the team moves toward a new project, it could represent Bungie’s biggest creative reset in years.
For now, Destiny 2 is preparing for its final chapter, while Bungie begins building the future beyond the game that defined much of its last decade.
