Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Officially Revealed With October 23 Release Date and Switch 2 Launch

Activision has officially announced Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, the next major entry in the Modern Warfare sub-series, with a confirmed release date of October 23, 2026. The game is being led by Infinity Ward and will launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2.

The announcement marks a major step for the franchise, especially as Modern Warfare 4 will skip previous-generation consoles entirely. This means the game will not be released on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One, allowing the developers to focus fully on current-generation hardware.

A Modern War on the Korean Peninsula

The campaign will center on a large-scale modern conflict involving North Korea, as war breaks out on the Korean Peninsula and threatens to destabilize the world. According to official details, the story will follow South Korean soldiers fighting on the front lines, while Captain Price becomes involved in a personal off-the-books mission from the shadows.

This setup suggests a darker and more grounded direction for the series, with Infinity Ward aiming to bring long-running storylines to a major emotional breaking point.

Launching on Nintendo Switch 2

One of the biggest surprises is the confirmation that Modern Warfare 4 will launch on Nintendo Switch 2 on the same day as other platforms. This marks Call of Duty’s major return to Nintendo hardware after more than a decade.

Activision confirmed that the Switch 2 version is being developed natively, with more details about pre-orders and platform-specific features expected later this summer.

Multiplayer and DMZ Return

Modern Warfare 4 will include the traditional Call of Duty package: campaign, multiplayer, and the return of DMZ. The extraction-based mode is expected to play a major role in the game’s post-launch ecosystem, alongside seasonal content connected to Warzone.

The game will also integrate with Call of Duty: Warzone after launch, with Season 1 introducing Modern Warfare 4 content and shared seasonal progression.

No Day-One Game Pass Mention

Although the game is listed for Xbox Series X|S and Xbox on PC, current official store information focuses on pre-orders and does not list Modern Warfare 4 as a day-one Xbox Game Pass release. That makes it a notable shift compared to expectations around Microsoft-owned Activision titles.

With a new campaign, current-gen focus, Switch 2 support, multiplayer, and DMZ, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is clearly being positioned as one of Activision’s biggest releases of 2026.
