Activision Takes Over the Next Halo Game as Xbox Restructures Major Studios

The Xbox ecosystem is undergoing one of its biggest restructurings in recent years, with the most notable change being Activision taking responsibility for developing the next mainline Halo game, alongside an expanded oversight role covering the studios associated with Sea of Thieves and Age of Empires.

With this change, Activision now holds a larger position within Microsoft Gaming, especially as it already controls major names such as Call of Duty, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, and Tony Hawk, while its role now extends to an additional group of Xbox's most prominent franchises.

Activision Will Lead Development of the Next Halo Game

The most important change undoubtedly concerns the Halo franchise, which has been one of the most iconic brands associated with Xbox since the launch of the original console.

Microsoft confirmed that the next mainline Halo game will be developed by a new team created specifically within Activision, operating separately from the Call of Duty development teams.

Meanwhile, a smaller team within Halo Studios will continue supporting the Halo community and the games that are currently available.

The decision represents a major shift in the history of the franchise, which began with Bungie before development responsibilities later moved to 343 Industries, which was subsequently renamed Halo Studios.

Now, the franchise is beginning a new phase under a completely different management and development structure from what its audience has been used to.

Rare and World’s Edge Under Activision’s Oversight

The Changes Do Not Stop With Halo.

As part of the new structure, Microsoft also confirmed that Activision's responsibilities will expand to include Rare and World’s Edge.

Rare is the studio behind Sea of Thieves, while World’s Edge oversees the Age of Empires franchise, meaning both studios will now operate under Activision's broader organizational umbrella.

This means Activision is now connected to a highly diverse group of games, ranging from shooters and strategy titles to online experiences, adventures, and platformers.

Why Is Microsoft Restructuring Its Xbox Studios?

According to Microsoft, the goal of these changes is to reduce the number of separate management units, bring together teams that can work more closely, and make greater use of existing expertise in publishing and managing major franchises.

The changes are not limited to Activision.

Bethesda's responsibilities have expanded to include Obsidian, while King has become responsible for Microsoft Casual Games, and Playground Games and Turn 10 are being combined into a single studio focused on the Forza and Fable franchises.

Therefore, what is happening with Halo is part of a broader reorganization of how Microsoft manages its studios and major franchises.

What Could Activision Bring to Halo?

For Halo fans, the most important question remains how this decision will affect the game itself.

So far, Microsoft has not revealed the nature of the upcoming game, its story, or its Gameplay, but what is confirmed is that an entirely new team under Activision will lead the project.

Activision has extensive experience managing and developing major shooter games thanks to Call of Duty, but Halo has a completely different identity.

The franchise relies on Sandbox design, vehicles, enemy variety, encounter design, and a science-fiction universe that has existed for more than two decades.

Therefore, the real challenge for the new team will be to develop and modernize the experience without losing the elements that defined Halo's identity from the beginning.

Will Halo Begin an Entirely New Story?

Following the announcement of the change, discussions and speculation began to emerge about the possibility of Activision using the upcoming game as a new starting point for the story instead of directly continuing the current storylines.

However, so far, there has been no official announcement from Microsoft or Activision confirming a reboot of Halo's story or the cancellation of the franchise's current Lore.

The official announcement only confirmed that a new team within Activision will develop the next Halo game.

This is not the first time the franchise has considered offering a new entry point for audiences; Halo Infinite was previously presented as a kind of "Spiritual Reboot," but it continued within the same Continuity and did not erase the events of previous games.

Therefore, the idea of starting an entirely new Lore remains speculation until Microsoft reveals official details.

Activision Now Has a Bigger Role Within Xbox

Since Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard, a huge collection of some of the biggest names in the gaming industry has already become part of the Xbox ecosystem.

However, the new restructuring makes Activision's role much larger than simply managing the franchises it owned before the acquisition.

Alongside Call of Duty, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, and Tony Hawk, Activision now oversees Rare and World’s Edge, in addition to taking responsibility for developing the next mainline Halo game.

For Halo, the decision marks the beginning of a completely different phase in the franchise's history.

The question now is not only which company is managing Halo, but how Activision will handle one of Xbox's most important franchises and whether it can deliver something new while preserving the elements that made audiences connect with the series from the beginning.
