MachineGames Still Committed to Wolfenstein’s Return, but Only When the Time Is Right

The Wolfenstein series has been absent from the spotlight for several years, but according to its developers, the door is far from closed. Studio MachineGames has reaffirmed that plans to continue the franchise still exist, even if the timing is not yet right.

In an interview with GamesIndustry, studio director Jerk Gustafsson spoke candidly about the evolving nature of game development. He pointed out that the length of modern development cycles has increased significantly, to the point where he expects to have only two or three major projects left in his professional career.

When asked directly about the future of Wolfenstein, Gustafsson avoided making firm promises but emphasized that the studio has never abandoned its original vision. According to him, the long-term goal has always been to complete the trilogy, whether that happens in the near future or further down the line.

The last main entry in the Wolfenstein series was released in 2019. Since then, MachineGames has shifted its focus toward a different major project: Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. The game launched on Xbox platforms in 2024, arrived on PlayStation 5 in 2025, and is scheduled to release on Nintendo Switch 2 in 2026.

Gustafsson also expressed pride in the work his team has delivered over the years, while highlighting his desire to expand the studio’s creative horizons. He noted interest in exploring new genres and even hinted at the possibility of developing a mobile game in the future, though he acknowledged that such a move would require skill sets the team does not currently possess.

For fans of Wolfenstein, the message is clear: the series is not forgotten, but its return will only happen when the studio believes the moment is right.
