The Witcher 4 Gameplay Changes Revealed: New Movement System, Smarter NPCs, and Ciri’s Agile Combat
CD Projekt Red has shared new details about The Witcher 4, revealing significant changes to gameplay systems and world interaction compared to its predecessor.
The studio discussed these updates during the AnsweRED podcast, where developers confirmed that the upcoming title will introduce a redesigned movement system along with more dynamic non-playable characters.
A New Movement System for Ciri
One of the biggest gameplay shifts comes from the change in protagonist. With Ciri taking the lead role, the movement system is being redesigned to match her agility.
According to the developers, Ciri will move faster and more fluidly than Geralt did in previous games. The new system will include:
• A dedicated jump button for the first time in the series
• The ability to move while casting spells
• More agile traversal mechanics suited to Ciri’s fighting style
These changes are meant to create a combat and exploration experience that feels noticeably different from The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
Underwater Combat and Exploration
The game will also expand environmental interaction. Players will now be able to swim underwater and encounter sea monsters during exploration, adding another layer of danger to the world.
A Familiar World Size With More Interactivity
While the size of the open world is expected to remain similar to The Witcher 3, the development team emphasized that the focus this time will be on world interactivity and NPC behavior.
NPCs will be more varied and reactive, aiming to make cities and settlements feel more alive than in previous entries.
Major Improvements to Animations and Emotional Expression
The animation system is reportedly receiving one of the largest upgrades in the series.
Because Ciri never underwent the traditional Witcher mutations, her personality and emotional responses will play a larger role in the narrative. To support that, the game will feature over 80 unique animation expressions, allowing for more nuanced character interactions and cinematic storytelling.
Marketing Campaign Expected Soon
CD Projekt Red also hinted that the official marketing campaign for The Witcher 4 will begin soon, suggesting that the game's release window could be approaching.
More details about the project are expected during Unreal Fest scheduled for June.
If the timing aligns, the industry may witness the marketing campaigns for The Witcher 4 and Grand Theft Auto VI launching around the same period—potentially setting up one of the biggest promotional battles in gaming history.
